California has the most stringent environmental laws in the world.\u00a0 One of those laws prohibits the sale of products made with kangaroo skin, such as the Predator cleat from Adidas. That\u2019s the preferred boot of David Beckham, the new center halfback for the LA Galaxy.\u00a0 But the prohibition makes no sense; kangaroos aren\u2019t exactly endangered, they are in fact becoming a menace in Australia.\u00a0 \u201cKangaroos are like rabbits,\u201d said Kalee St. Clair, who is from Sydney and has lived in California for more than four years. \u201cThey\u2019re not protected at all, and we\u2019re actually encouraged to kill them.\u201d\u00a0 Adidas has challenged the ruling, on the grounds that protecting a species with an exploding population threatens other truly endangered species.\u00a0 A bill is making its way through the California legislature that would overturn the law.\u00a0 In response, animal rights groups have come to the kangaroos\u2019 defense, pointing out that \u2018roos are half of the Australian national symbol.\u00a0 (BONUS TRIVIA:\u00a0 the other half is the emu, making Australia the only country in the world symbolized by TWO animals that can\u2019t walk backwards!)<\/p>\n
Beckham can\u2019t afford a PR stink just now.\u00a0 His multi-year contract with Adidas includes not only up-front payments but a cut of the profits of all of his products, including the cool new Galaxy jerseys.\u00a0 So, bending like Beckham, David has switched \u2013 for now \u2013 to the synthetic Predator.\u00a0 Glorious man-made fiber.\u00a0 That should help him rehab his injured image, and perhaps his injured ankle.\u00a0 Presumably, in his new shoes, Beckham will be able to run both forwards AND backwards.<\/p>\n
