But ONLY once before? Maybe that\u2019s because this year the Super Bowl falls on Ground Hog Day. And that might make you feel like it\u2019s 2014, the one and only other time this has happened. Which provides us an interesting opportunity to explore the effectiveness (or not) of Super Bowl advertising over time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To wit: here\u2019s a look back\nat the top 5 ads of Super Bowl 2014 (with a bit of postscript).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Number Five: Chrysler tapped Bob Dylan (!) to sing the praises of\nits \u201cmade in America\u201d line of cars. (CarSalesBase.com reports that 2014\nChrysler sales were approximately 300K; in 2019 that number had dropped to\n125K)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Chrysler and Bob Dylan Super Bowl Commercial 2014   America&#039;s Import\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qOotVKvKrdk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Number Four: Audi relaunched its A3 compact sedan by comparing it\nto a cross between a Doberman and a Chihuahua, in \u201cDoberhuahua.\u201d (A3 sales\nspiked from 22K to over 30K in the two years following this launch.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Audi &quot;Doberhuahua&quot;\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-qqQiGPf2jQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Number Three: T-Mobile noted that contracts are bad by humorously\nillustrating how much Tim Tebow can get done without a football job.\n(Macrotrends reports that T-Mobile sales have steadily risen from $24B to $44B\nsince 2014.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Tim Tebow&#039;s &quot;No Contract&quot; T-Mobile Super Bowl Commercial\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/b-f_6gr7y5s?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Number 2: Budweiser, a perennial game advertising favorite, warmed hearts with the story of the love between a Clydesdale and a dog in \u201cPuppy Love.\u201d (Bud remains the largest brand for Belgian owner InBev; sales in the US have been slipping for years, but are being made up for by increasing sales worldwide.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Budweiser: Super Bowl XLVIII Puppy Love #BudEpicAds\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dlNO2trC-mk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Number One: Coca-Cola won the day with a colorful, multi-lingual\ntake on \u201cAmerica the Beautiful.\u201d (2014 marked the beginning of a long slow\ndecline for Coke, from $46B to $33B annual sales; perhaps more important,\nAmerica itself has since descended into partisan xenophobia.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Coca-Cola - America The Beautiful (2014)\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vgEGXicDgAg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And one last thing about\nSuper Ground Hog Bowl 2014: the Broncos got crushed 43-8 by the Seahawks,\nmarking a record fifth loss for Denver in the big game.
