At least that\u2019s the opinion of one woman, who has waged a protracted legal battle to protect the tender spiritual sensibilities of impressionable young children. \u00a0There is a scourge in the school library, a dark force promoting witchcraft and the occult. \u00a0In September 2005, she pointed this out to the school librarian, who ignored her request to have several books removed from the shelves. \u00a0She then took her case to the Board of Education, who promptly threw out her complaint. \u00a0Fearing for her children\u2019s souls, she appealed to the State Board of Education (who rejected her) and then to the Gwinnett County Superior Court. \u00a0So next Tuesday, in a courtroom in suburban Atlanta, Ms. Laura Mallory of Gwinnett,Georgia, USA will face off against Mr. Harry Potter of #4 Privet Drive, Little Whinging, Surrey, Great Britain, in the final battle for the future of mankind.<\/p>\n
None too soon.\u00a0 Potter\u2019s dark influence is spreading. \u00a0His fifth movie, \u201cHarry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix\u201d opens July 11. \u00a0His seventh installment, \u201cHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallows\u201d hits bookstores ten days later. \u00a0Ten days after that, on July 31, it\u2019s Harry\u2019s birthday! \u00a0And Georgia isn\u2019t the only state under his evil dominion. \u00a0Down in Florida, Universal Orlando has just announced plans to build \u201cThe Wizarding World of Harry Potter,\u201d slated to open in 2009.<\/p>\n
No wonder Ms. Mallory is worried.\u00a0 In a recent interview, she said, “Personally, I don’t think it’s a good idea to raise a whole generation of witches. I don’t think it’s good for our country\u2026 kids today don\u2019t want the Easter Bunny\u2019s power, they want Harry\u2019s power, and they\u2019re getting it\u2026 I have a dream that God will be welcomed back in our schools again, I think we need him.\u201d<\/p>\n
She also acknowledges that she hasn\u2019t actually read a single page of any of the Potter books.<\/p>\n
