{"id":456,"date":"2007-06-15T09:32:49","date_gmt":"2007-06-15T13:32:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thequicksliver.wordpress.com\/?p=456"},"modified":"2007-06-15T09:32:49","modified_gmt":"2007-06-15T13:32:49","slug":"6-15-07-northern-secession","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quicksilverhg.com\/thequicksliver\/6-15-07-northern-secession\/","title":{"rendered":"6.15.07 Northern Secession"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When Vermont was in DC\u2019s land, let my Holsteins go!<\/p>\n<p>Vermont was an independent republic longer than any other U.S. state, from 1777 to 1791.\u00a0 It came rather unwillingly into the American empire and has never given up its renegade streak. \u00a0In the war of 1812, Vermont refused to send soldiers.\u00a0 Long before the Civil War, Vermont\u2019s stand against slavery was so strong that the Georgia legislature passed a resolution that a ditch should be dug around Vermont and the state floated out to sea. \u00a0You can look it up.\u00a0 Vermont has repeatedly rejected Washington\u2019s help during natural disasters.\u00a0 In 1985, Vermont took the national government to the Supreme Court to try to prevent it from instituting a national 21-year-old drinking age. \u00a0It lost.<\/p>\n<p>Now the state has had enough.\u00a0 In 2005, a statewide convention was held to discuss whether Vermont should secede from the Union.\u00a0 Later that year, a poll indicated that almost 10% of voters favored such a measure.\u00a0 Last fall, the First North American Secessionist Convention was held in Burlington to lay out the case against the American Empire:\u00a0 Washington has gotten too bloated and militaristic, the 10<sup>th<\/sup> Amendment protecting states rights has been violated, and global economics are taking over the people\u2019s ability to lead a sustainable life. \u00a0Vermont is not alone.\u00a0 Alaska, California, Hawaii, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Texas all have secessionist movements of some sort. \u00a0But only Vermont has already adopted a new name for itself:\u00a0 The Second Vermont Republic. \u00a0Cool.<\/p>\n<p>That got us thinking about the vast marketing potential of Vermont as an independent nation. \u00a0We like the idea of our next trip to Stratton being repositioned as \u201ca weekend abroad.\u201d\u00a0 We can send our kids to UVM to immerse them in a foreign culture. \u00a0The state capital Montpelier should be given a new and exotic name, like, say, Montpelier. \u00a0How about \u201cThe Mountains of Greenness, home of the Hump of the Camel\u201d? \u00a0Best of all, a nasty plate of mac and cheese becomes \u201crigatoni with fine imported cheddar.\u201d\u00a0 Yum.<\/p>\n<p>quickSilver hereby supports the cause of Vermont independence. \u00a0We refuse, however, to pay any tariffs on Chunky Monkey.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"When Vermont was in DC\u2019s land, let my Holsteins go!
