{"id":670,"date":"2011-04-29T16:07:56","date_gmt":"2011-04-29T20:07:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thequicksliver.wordpress.com\/?p=670"},"modified":"2011-04-29T16:07:56","modified_gmt":"2011-04-29T20:07:56","slug":"4-29-11-royal-cheese","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quicksilverhg.com\/thequicksliver\/4-29-11-royal-cheese\/","title":{"rendered":"4.29.11 Royal Cheese"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name=\"LETTER.BLOCK1\"><\/a><a name=\"LETTER.BLOCK1\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Justin Tunstall gave up the big city for cheese.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"LETTER.BLOCK1\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"LETTER.BLOCK1\"><\/a><a name=\"LETTER.BLOCK1\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>He had enjoyed a successful career in publishing but wanted to get back to his hometown, the small village of Lyme Regis, Dorset, in England&#8217;s West Country.\u00a0 In 2008, he created the Town Mill Cheesemonger, a tiny shop stocked floor to ceiling with cheese.\u00a0 Cheese from Dorset, cheese from all over the UK, and even a few from the continent.\u00a0 And all of it started flying off the shelves.\u00a0 Within weeks of opening, Justin was selling three times as much cheese as he had projected.\u00a0 In 2009, the store was named the best new cheese shop at the 2009 British Cheese Awards. And in 2010, it received a Silver award in the retail category at the Best of the West show.\u00a0 Blimey.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"LETTER.BLOCK1\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"LETTER.BLOCK1\"><\/a><a name=\"LETTER.BLOCK1\"><\/a>This past March, Justin rolled out a new cheese: a wheel of Mature Dorset Cheddar from nearby Ford Farm, encased in black wax and weighing in at 200 grams.\u00a0 A fine item.\u00a0 But what made it really special was the commemorative label, which read, &#8220;Congratulations, Wills &amp; Kate.&#8221;\u00a0 Then, as a complete afterthought, in the spirit of inclusion, a twin item was added:\u00a0 the same Dorset Cheddar.\u00a0 But this one was labeled, &#8220;Sod the wedding, it&#8217;s a day off!&#8221;\u00a0 You can probably guess what happened next.\u00a0 The anti-wedding cheese outsold the pro-wedding cheese by 8 to 1.\u00a0 What you probably would NOT have expected is that these results would get picked up by the national press.\u00a0 Suddenly, the big city that Justin Tunstall left behind couldn&#8217;t get enough of him and his cheese.\u00a0 The Daily Mail was analyzing his sales.\u00a0 The BBC was editorializing about what it all meant.\u00a0 The celebrated dueling cheeses of Town Mill Cheesemonger have become a kind of grassroots indicator of Britain&#8217;s love for (or disdain of) the royal wedding.\u00a0 Call it the cheese index.\u00a0 The cheddar gauge.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"LETTER.BLOCK1\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"LETTER.BLOCK1\"><\/a><a name=\"LETTER.BLOCK1\"><\/a>Is the royal family cheesed off about the 8-1 drubbing in Dorset?\u00a0 Probably not.\u00a0 The wedding should still be a huge success.\u00a0 Over a billion people will tune in.\u00a0 Approximately 327 million photographs will be taken.\u00a0 The bells of Westminster Abbey will ring for 3 hours.\u00a0 By the end of the day, all people will remember is how lovely it all was.\u00a0 Right?<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"LETTER.BLOCK1\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"LETTER.BLOCK1\"><\/a><a name=\"LETTER.BLOCK1\"><\/a>(Uh-oh, this just in:\u00a0 Over at the Chester Zoo, a pair of royal starlings named Wills and Kate have turned out to be two males.\u00a0 They are being renamed Willy and Nate.\u00a0 Blimey.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Justin Tunstall gave up the big city for cheese.
