8.21.15 Guilt, by God!
Do you have Friday guilt? You know, that feeling that you didn’t get enough done this week, the weekend’s coming, and you really didn’t earn the time off. Are you thinking about that old poke-in-the-ribs, “idle hands are the Devil’s playground”? Admit it, you feel guilty, you WANT to keep working, don’tcha? Well DON’TCHA??
If so, you probably went to church as a kid, and you never got over it. Researchers at the University of Georgia have reported that people who regularly attend church services as children tend to be workaholics later in life. On average, folks who grow up in church report that they work one week more per year than the average person. And it’s not just Catholic guilt. Protestants are worse, reporting that they work a full 80 hours more per year than everyone else. UGA economics professor Ron Warren explains, “Religious participation in childhood may instill a work ethic that is driven by early religious training, beliefs, or practice.”
Now, we love research, but we’re cynical. So here’s an alternate explanation. Perhaps folks who attend church as kids learn to DESCRIBE themselves more earnestly than the average person. You know, “I work REALLY hard, honest.” In other words, they are as lazy as everyone else, but they’re just fibbing. (But that would be a lie, which would be, well, sinful, so that can’t be true, right?)
Just something to think about.
Or……..feel guilty about…..dang it…..
But we digress. Back to work, slackers.
