9.7.18 In the Pink
For those of you who suspect that Marketing and Graphic Design is all a bunch of hifalutin hooey, the following may or may not dissuade you. For the rest of you, it’s just a fun quiz.
There’s an organization in America that was in need of a name. The organization involves athletics. And it’s in a city heavily influenced by fashion, and by Latin and South America. So the organization named itself with a tip of the hat to a similar organization from Milan, one of the fashion centers of Europe.
They also needed a logo, or what they call a crest. They started with a simple circle-within-a-circle. The design agency claimed that that stood for Inclusion, and was a reference to native peoples called the Tequesta who hunted fish with spears, similar to White Herons, who are common to the area…
…which explains the two White Herons in the crest center. Their legs entwine to form the letter M, and are meant to signify, “the unbreakable unity” of the city’s diverse peoples.
Above them is a 7-rayed eclipse. It is a reference to the long duration of the owner’s career, some mysterious importance of the number 7 within the organization, and “the 7 seas that bring visitors to the city from all 7 continents.”
The herons and eclipse are held within a “kite-shield,” the three points of which refer to the three counties that make up the city’s metropolitan area. And headlining the shield is the city name, in an Andean-looking font.
The organization name encircles the whole thing, laid out is a strong all-capital font, and expressed in Spanish, complete with an accent mark. And at the bottom are the Roman numerals MMXX, denoting the year the organization will become active.
Most notably, the whole thing is rendered in black, white and…wait for it… pastel pink! It’s telegraphically symbolic of the city’s edgy design sensibility. (And it’s going to make for some magnificent jerseys and memorabilia.)
Have you figured it out?
It’s David Beckham’s new MLS soccer franchise, Club Internacional de Fútbol de Miami. It will be known in shorthand as Miami CF, or Inter Miami. And it will be coming to a stadium near you, in shocking pink, in 2020. Impressionante.
And, since this is Beckham’s baby, OF COURSE they shot a video of him presenting the name of the team and the design of the crest, and OF COURSE he’s sitting on a modern leather couch, and OF COURSE he’s wearing a tight black T-shirt. (And OF COURSE I have the link.)
SBNation.com gives Inter Miami’s new crest 9 herons out of 10. De Acuerdo.
